Because the logs settle over time (4 to 6 inches is not uncommon), special techniques are required when building with logs. Log Cabin: Assembling and Finishing will show you what you need to know to keep windows, doors, walls, cabinets, pipes, and cables from being crushed as the logs settle. You’ll also see how to sand, stain, and seal the logs to highlight the wood grain and how to fill the gaps between logs with the newest chinking materials.

This 2,270-square-foot log home is filled with fixtures and materials chosen to highlight the rustic beauty of the home. Included are a roof of concrete tiles with copper flashing, antique white-pine flooring, a fieldstone fireplace made with stone found on the site, vintage-style bath fixtures including a pull-chain water closet and a Victorian cast-iron bathtub, terra cotta floor tiles, hand-painted backsplash tiles, and stairs and railings made of logs.
