About the DVD collection:
In this 3-DVD set we cover the construction of a 3,100-square-foot house on a typical cul-de-sac lot. We explore how to maintain a human-scale exterior while simultaneously creating the illusion inside that the house is more massive than it is.
The first DVD covers site prep; pouring and insulating the foundation walls; installation of panelized walls; hand-framing the roof and second story; window installation (including custom art-glass panes); duct work; plumbing rough-in featuring solderless crimp fittings for the copper supply lines; electrical rough-in featuring structured cable, telephone, security, whole-house audio, and central vacuum; roofing with three-tab shingles; installation of exterior, pre-primed composite trim; insulating to the new model energy code; and hanging drywall. Of particular interest are interviews with the architects and tours of an LVL plant, a panelization plant, and a drywall manufacturing plant.
Attention shifts to the exterior. Topics covered include installation of the retaining walls and concrete paver driveway and patios, underground sprinkler system, and planting beds; application of the stucco and manufactured stone veneer; and installation of the clay chimney pots and top-mount dampers. Indoors we see the drywall taping; priming; millwork installation, including stone stools and ledges; application of the stone veneer to the fireplaces; installation of the recycled oak flooring; and prep work for the tile, including the installation of an electric floor warming mat in the owners’ bathroom. Special segments include interviews with the architect, landscape designer, and interior designers, plus a trip to a ceramics studio to see the creation of our special blackware accent tiles.
The materials chosen add to the architectural elements to enhance the sophisticated rustic style of the home. Featured elements include cherry cabinetry; custom
concrete countertops; ceramic tile including limestone, 3x6 subway tile, sliced river rock, and glass mosaic; massive expanded foam columns finished with stucco; handmade Spanish cedar doors; oil-rubbed bronze door hardware;
carriage house-style garage doors; stained concrete floors; copper gutters; and natural steel light fixtures. Also featured are construction of the wine storage racks, plumbing trim-outs, appliance installation, and electrical
trim-outs.
On the final DVD we see the custom staircase, comprising risers and treads of recycled oak flooring, a cherry column, and custom iron railing panels, is built; custom interior windows are installed; carpet is laid; electronics, including the phone and security systems are installed; and the furniture and accessories are moved in. Includes final tours with the architect and interior designers.
